From Survival to Hope

There are moments in life when a person realizes that something has to change.

For Dayana, that moment came when she looked at her three children and knew that staying was no longer an option.

Their father was extremely abusive, and the situation had become dangerous. Dayana knew that if she wanted to protect her children, she had to find a way out. Leaving meant stepping into an uncertain future, but she was willing to face that uncertainty if it meant giving her children a chance at safety.

Dayana has always been a hard worker. She wasn’t afraid of work—she was afraid of not being able to provide what her children needed.

After leaving, she took on two jobs. In the mornings, she worked cleaning at a gym. In the afternoons and evenings, she sold milk products. She worked long hours because she was determined to provide for her family.

But even working two jobs wasn’t enough.

There simply weren’t enough hours in the day or enough money to meet all of their needs. Housing, food, school expenses, and everyday necessities consumed nearly everything she earned.

And the cost wasn’t only financial.

Dayana had almost no time with her children.

She was working to give them a better life, but the demands of survival meant she rarely had the opportunity to simply be their mom. There were also times when the family went hungry.

Dayana was doing everything she could, yet she still found herself in a desperate situation.

But she never stopped dreaming.

A Place to Begin Again

Then Dayana heard about the Village of Hope.

The opportunity to move there with her children offered something she desperately needed: stability.

For the first time in a long time, Dayana could begin thinking about what life could look like beyond simply getting through the next day.

Moving to the Village of Hope helped relieve some of the financial pressure she had been carrying. With a safe and stable place to live, she could begin focusing on her children, her education, and her future.

She began studying and has a dream of graduating someday.

That may sound like a simple goal, but for Dayana, it represents something much bigger. It represents the opportunity to build a life that isn’t defined by abuse, poverty, or survival.

It represents a future she gets to choose.

A New Dream Begins

While continuing to work at the gym, Dayana began noticing something that would eventually change the direction of her life.

Every day, she watched people come into the gym working hard to become healthier and live better lives.

Their commitment inspired her.

She began thinking about health in a different way and wondered if she could create something of her own—something that could provide an income while also helping people make healthier choices.

An idea began to take shape.

Desserts.

But not just any desserts.

Dayana began experimenting with healthier dessert options that were gluten-free, sugar-free, and dairy-free.

She didn’t have a large commercial kitchen. She didn’t have a storefront. She didn’t have a lot of money to invest.

She had an idea, determination, and a dream.

So she saved.

Little by little, Dayana put money aside until she had enough to purchase her own small oven.

That oven became more than a piece of equipment.

It represented possibility.

It was a tangible reminder that Dayana wasn’t just surviving anymore. She was building something.

From an Idea to a Business

Today, Dayana works at the gym in the mornings and spends her afternoons working on her growing dessert business.

She recently took another exciting step by hosting a launch party at the local fire station.

But Dayana didn’t just celebrate what she was building. She wanted to give back.

She donated a portion of her earnings from the event to support the fire station and the work they do in their community.

The woman who once struggled to provide enough food for her own children was now using the business she had built to bless others.

That’s transformation.

Dayana has also joined a small-business group in town, where she is learning from other entrepreneurs and building relationships that can help her business grow.

And she isn’t stopping there.

She is preparing to participate in a Christmas event where she will have her own booth and sell her products.

There is still a long road ahead. Building a small business takes time. Finishing her education will take perseverance. Raising three children while working and pursuing a dream won’t always be easy.

But Dayana now has something she didn’t have before.

She has options.

She has stability.

She has people walking alongside her.

And she has hope.

More Than a Place to Live

The Village of Hope has given Dayana and her children more than a roof over their heads.

It has given them breathing room.

It has given Dayana the opportunity to spend time with her children instead of working every waking hour just to keep them fed.

It has given her the opportunity to study.

It has given her a safe place from which to build.

And it has given her the freedom to begin imagining a future for her family.

Today, her children have food, shelter, schooling, and stability.

Their mother is building a business.

She is pursuing her education.

She is learning new skills.

She is becoming part of her community.

And she is teaching her children something incredibly powerful: your circumstances do not have to determine your future.

Dayana’s story is still being written.

The little oven she saved to purchase may seem like a small thing, but it represents something much larger. It represents a woman who has moved from surviving to dreaming—and from dreaming to doing.

She left an unsafe situation to protect her children.

She worked two jobs to keep them alive.

She endured seasons of hunger and uncertainty.

She found a place where her family could begin again.

And now she is building something of her own.

A business.

An education.

A future.

A life filled with hope.

You Are Part of This Story

Stories like Dayana’s don’t happen because of one person or one organization.

They happen because people choose to care.

They happen because donors provide the resources that make safe housing, education, support, and new opportunities possible.

They happen because God opens doors and provides people willing to walk through them.

When you support the work of the James Project, you aren’t simply helping provide a place to live. You are helping create opportunities for women and children to move from crisis toward stability, from fear toward safety, and from survival toward hope.

Dayana is still building her future.

Her children are growing up with greater stability.

And that little oven sitting in her home is producing more than healthier desserts.

It is producing opportunity.

It is producing independence.

It is producing hope.

And because of God’s faithfulness and the generosity of people who have chosen to invest in this work, Dayana and her children are no longer simply surviving.

They are building a future.
