The Hernández family is a family of five: Mom, Dad, and their three children. Their story is one of unimaginable loss, incredible perseverance, and, ultimately, hope.
When their oldest daughter was just a young child, the family learned that she was suffering from serious kidney problems. Her condition became so severe that she needed dialysis multiple times a week.
For this family, getting medical care was anything but easy.
They had to travel by chicken bus into the city again and again so their daughter could receive the treatment she needed. The trips were long, exhausting, and expensive. Soon, nearly every resource the family had was being spent on dialysis, medication, and transportation.
Eventually, the day came when their daughter needed a kidney transplant.
Her father was tested—and he was a match.
Without hesitation, he gave his daughter one of his kidneys.
After the transplant, she began to improve. For the first time in a long time, the family had reason to celebrate. Their daughter was getting healthier, and they believed they were finally turning a corner.
But even as her health improved, the financial burden remained. The family continued pouring everything they had into her medications and care.
Then tragedy struck.
Their daughter was bitten by a mosquito and contracted dengue. Despite everything her family had done to fight for her life, she died.
Their hearts were shattered.
The family had already sacrificed so much. A father had given his own kidney to his daughter. They had spent every resource they had on her care. They had endured countless trips for dialysis and lived through tremendous uncertainty.
And now, she was gone.
With their daughter’s death came an even deeper season of hardship. The Hernández family found themselves living under a bridge in a makeshift shanty while caring for someone else’s property. They had land of their own, but having land and having a home were two very different things. They simply did not have the resources to build.
They felt forgotten.
But God had not forgotten them.
Even in the darkest moments, God saw the Hernández family. He heard their prayers. He knew their loss. He knew their need.
And He began to provide.
Through the generosity of people who chose to give, the Hernández family now has something they once could only hope for—a home of their own.
A safe place to sleep.
A place where their children can grow.
A place they can call home.
For a family who had spent so long feeling unseen and abandoned, this home is more than four walls and a roof. It is a tangible reminder that God sees them, God hears them, and God has not forgotten them.
Today, the Hernández family is celebrating what God has done in their lives.
Their story still carries the pain of losing their daughter. Nothing can erase that loss. But their story doesn’t end there.
They have hope.
They believe that one day, they will see their daughter again.
And until that day, they can look around their new home and remember that God was faithful—even when they couldn’t see what He was doing.
They felt forgotten. But God never lost sight of them.
And because of generous donors who opened their hearts to help the vulnerable through James Project, the Hernández family now knows what it feels like to be seen.
